GROWING TEXTILES// To be able to grow fabric sounds amazing. I absolutely want to try growing fabric from kombucha this semester on my own just to see what it would feel like, how durable it would be, and form my own opinion on its practicality. This seems like a sustainable practice that could change the textile industry. There could be many advancements in growing textiles. The idea of genetically engineering bacteria to produce waterproof textiles or textiles that mimic the hand of other fabrics is amazing. By growing engineered textiles we could cut the current textile consumption rate down.
3D PRINTING// At first this concept was almost impossible to understand, how could you print something into a shape? Impossible! But after researching this topic I now have a vague understanding the mechanics that are involved. This aspect of technology has so many possibilities for the future; the idea that companies could sell designs of their garments and people could print them from home is revolutionary. Think of the waste that could be eliminated! Trucks to drive the clothes, boxes that carry them and rude sales associates gone! All gone! Of course this future also depends on the ability to find materials and textiles that work well with 3-D printing. This technology is also interesting from a medical standpoint. Although I am no doctor it seems like this technology could be used to print prosthetics. An article I read mentioned organs but that too seems like it would be far in the future before happening.
These two technological advances in the fashion industry have endless possibilities. Both have the potential to change the industry and create new jobs and businesses as we move away from older practices. I have no doubt in my mind that the future of fashion is moving in these two directions and as they become well known developments will come faster and the way people view the retail industry or textile production will change.
